As we close out 2023, I find myself reflecting on a year filled with both personal achievements and significant developments in the world of AI. It was an honor to learn that several of my written works were recognized and included in various "best of" lists.
In particular, my article “AI in Education” was featured in the Top 20 Education Next Articles of 2023. My hope for this piece is that it would provide a useful overview of GenAI and then explore some of the benefits and challenges it presents for teaching and learning.
Another highlight was having my essay “The Promise of Personalized Learning Never Delivered. Today’s AI Is Different,” included in The 74's Most Read Essays. In this piece, I examined the shortcomings of previous attempts at personalized learning and how the advent of advanced AI technologies could potentially revolutionize the way we approach individualized education.
Throughout the year, I also had the opportunity to give several presentations aimed at helping diverse audiences understand the capabilities of GenAI. I learned that the most effective way to convey the potential of GenAI was to "show" rather than simply "tell." To that end, I would demonstrate different use cases for specific audiences which I then added to a comprehensive deck.
As I look back on 2023, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute in a small way to better understand this rapidly evolving technology.
