Biden to pick Miguel Cardona, proponent of reopening schools, as education secretary
From the opposite end of the education policy spectrum, John Bailey, a fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, called Cardona an excellent choice.
"His background as a teacher, principal, and state school chief will be invaluable in helping schools safely and responsibly reopen and address the learning loss pandemic on the other side of reopening," said Bailey, who is also an adviser to the Walton Family Foundation.

“It’s just ludicrous that we don’t have that” broader data gathering, said John Bailey, a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute who worked on education and labor policy at the White House during the Bush administration. “That information is what’s going to tell us whether or not schools are super spreaders.”

It doesn’t need to stay like this, though, says Mr. Bailey. While the next education secretary will have to face the long-term impact from the pandemic, and from years of fighting, the position itself does not have to remain controversial.
“I don’t think it has become a polarized position,” he says. “It requires the person who is secretary to understand we are in a polarized environment.”
